In today’s digital age, social media has become an essential tool for businesses to connect with their audience, build brand awareness, and drive sales. However, navigating the ever-changing landscape of social media marketing can be daunting without a solid strategy in place. That’s where the 7 C’s of social media marketing come into play. These seven principles serve as a roadmap to help businesses effectively leverage social media platforms to achieve their marketing goals.

Let’s delve into each of the 7 C’s and explore how they can be applied to your social media marketing strategy.

The 7 C’s of Social Media Marketing

  1. Content
  2. Context
  3. Consistency
  4. Conversation
  5. Community
  6. Conversion
  7. Curation
1. Content

Content is the cornerstone of any successful social media marketing campaign. It encompasses everything from blog posts and articles to images, videos, and infographics. The key is to create content that resonates with your target audience and provides value. This could mean sharing informative articles, entertaining videos, or behind-the-scenes glimpses into your business. By consistently delivering high-quality content, you can establish your brand as a trusted authority in your industry and keep your audience engaged and coming back for more.

content

To effectively apply content to your social media marketing strategy, consider the following:

  • Understand Your Audience: Research your target audience to understand their preferences, interests, and pain points. Tailor your content to address their needs and provide value.
  • Create High-Quality Content: Invest in creating compelling and visually appealing content that captures the attention of your audience. Use storytelling techniques, vibrant visuals, and engaging formats to stand out in crowded social media feeds.
  • Maintain Consistency: Consistency is crucial for building brand recognition and maintaining audience engagement. Develop a content calendar and post regularly to keep your audience informed and interested in your brand.
  • Optimize for Each Platform: Different social media platforms have unique features and audience demographics. Customize your content to fit the requirements and preferences of each platform to maximize its effectiveness.
  • Encourage Interaction: Foster two-way communication with your audience by encouraging likes, comments, shares, and direct messages. Respond promptly to comments and messages to build rapport and strengthen relationships with your audience.
  • Monitor Performance: Use analytics tools to track the performance of your content. Monitor metrics such as engagement, reach, clicks, and conversions to identify what content resonates most with your audience and optimize your strategy accordingly.
  • Stay Relevant and Trending: Keep an eye on industry trends, current events, and popular topics relevant to your audience. Incorporate timely content into your strategy to demonstrate your brand’s relevance and stay ahead of the competition.

By prioritizing high-quality, relevant content in your social media marketing strategy, you can effectively engage your audience, build brand awareness, and drive meaningful interactions that ultimately lead to business growth and success.

2. Context

Understanding the context in which your audience consumes content on social media is crucial. Each platform has its own unique audience demographics, user behavior, and content formats. For example, LinkedIn is primarily used for professional networking and B2B marketing, while Instagram is more visual and geared towards lifestyle and fashion. Tailor your content to fit the specific context of each platform to maximize its effectiveness. This may involve adapting your messaging, tone, and content format to better resonate with your audience on each platform.

context

Here’s how you can apply context to your strategy:

  • Know Your Audience: Understand the demographics, interests, and behaviors of your target audience. This knowledge helps you create content that resonates with them and aligns with their context.
  • Understand Platform Dynamics: Different social media platforms have unique features, algorithms, and user behaviours. Tailor your content to fit the context of each platform to maximize its effectiveness. For example, Instagram is more visual-centric, while Twitter is known for its real-time updates and conversations.
  • Timing is Key: Pay attention to when your audience is most active on social media. Posting your content at optimal times ensures that it reaches your audience when they’re most likely to engage with it.
  • Relevance is Paramount: Ensure that your content is relevant to your audience’s interests, current events, and trends. By staying attuned to what’s happening in your industry and the world, you can create content that resonates with your audience’s context.
  • Personalization: Tailor your messaging to the individual preferences and behaviours of your audience segments. Personalized content that speaks directly to the needs and interests of your audience enhances the relevance and effectiveness of your social media marketing efforts.
  • Listen and Respond: Monitor conversations and feedback related to your brand or industry on social media. Engage with your audience by responding to comments, addressing concerns, and participating in relevant discussions. This demonstrates that you understand the context in which your audience operates and value their input.
  • Stay Authentic: Authenticity is key to building trust and credibility with your audience. Ensure that your content and messaging reflect your brand’s values, voice, and personality, aligning with the context of your audience’s expectations.

By considering the context in which your audience interacts with your content, you can create more relevant, engaging, and effective social media marketing campaigns that resonate with your audience and drive meaningful results.

3. Consistency

Consistency is key to maintaining a strong presence on social media. Posting regularly helps keep your brand top of mind and ensures that your audience stays engaged with your content. Create a content calendar to plan out your posts in advance and maintain a consistent posting schedule. This could mean posting once a day, three times a week, or whatever frequency works best for your audience and resources. Additionally, consistency extends beyond just posting frequency—it also applies to the quality and tone of your content. Aim to maintain a consistent brand voice and aesthetic across all your social media channels to reinforce your brand identity.

Applying consistency to your social media marketing strategy involves establishing a predictable rhythm of posting, maintaining brand coherence, and delivering a reliable experience for your audience. Here’s how consistency can be applied:

  • Posting Schedule: Develop a consistent posting schedule that aligns with your audience’s preferences and behaviours. Whether it’s daily, weekly, or multiple times a day, maintaining a regular cadence ensures that your audience knows when to expect new content from your brand.
  • Brand Voice and Visuals: Maintain consistency in your brand’s voice, tone, and visual identity across all social media platforms. This includes using consistent language, imagery, colours, and design elements that reinforce your brand’s personality and values.
  • Content Themes and Topics: Establish consistent themes and topics for your content that resonate with your audience and align with your brand’s messaging and objectives. This helps reinforce your brand’s identity and expertise in specific areas while providing value to your audience.
  • Engagement and Interaction: Be consistently responsive and engaged with your audience by promptly addressing comments, messages, and mentions. Regularly interact with your audience through likes, shares, and comments to foster meaningful connections and build relationships.
  • Branding Elements: Incorporate consistent branding elements such as logos, hashtags, and slogans into your social media posts and profiles. This reinforces brand recognition and ensures that your content is easily identifiable as belonging to your brand.
  • Quality Standards: Maintain consistent quality standards for your content to uphold your brand’s reputation and credibility. Whether it’s imagery, video production, or written content, strive for excellence in every aspect of your social media presence.
  • Monitoring and Optimization: Continuously monitor the performance of your social media efforts and optimize your strategy based on insights and feedback. Consistently tracking metrics such as engagement, reach, and conversions allows you to refine your approach and ensure ongoing success.

By prioritizing consistency in your social media marketing strategy, you can build trust, strengthen brand identity, and cultivate a loyal audience that consistently engages with your content. Consistency reinforces your brand’s presence in the minds of your audience, ultimately driving long-term growth and success.

4. Conversation

Social media is inherently social, so it’s essential to foster two-way communication with your audience. Encourage dialogue by asking questions, responding to comments, and actively engaging with your followers. This not only helps build stronger relationships with your audience but also provides valuable insights into their needs, preferences, and pain points. Use social listening tools to monitor conversations around your brand and industry and join in on relevant discussions. By actively participating in conversations on social media, you can humanize your brand and establish a deeper connection with your audience.

conversation

Incorporating conversation into your social media marketing strategy involves actively listening to your audience, encouraging dialogue, and responding thoughtfully to their comments, questions, and feedback. Here’s how conversation can be applied:

  • Listen Actively: Monitor social media platforms to stay informed about conversations related to your brand, industry, or relevant topics. Actively listen to your audience’s opinions, concerns, and interests to gain insights into their preferences and sentiments.
  • Encourage Engagement: Promptly respond to comments, messages, and mentions from your audience to demonstrate that you value their input and are attentive to their needs. Encourage engagement by asking questions, soliciting feedback, and inviting users to share their experiences.
  • Authentic Interactions: Engage with your audience authentically by adopting a conversational tone and voice in your communications. Avoid overly promotional language and focus on building genuine connections with your audience based on mutual interests and values.
  • Provide Value: Offer valuable insights, information, or assistance to your audience through your conversations. Share helpful resources, answer questions, and provide solutions to address their needs, positioning your brand as a trusted authority in your industry.
  • Facilitate Community: Create opportunities for your audience to connect with each other and participate in discussions related to your brand or industry. Foster a sense of community by hosting live chats, Twitter chats, or Facebook groups where users can engage with each other and with your brand.
  • Feedback Loop: Use conversations with your audience as a feedback mechanism to inform your social media strategy and improve your products or services. Pay attention to recurring themes or issues raised by your audience and take action to address them effectively.
  • Empower Advocates: Identify and nurture brand advocates within your audience who actively engage with your content and promote your brand to others. Acknowledge and appreciate their support, and empower them to become ambassadors for your brand through exclusive offers or opportunities.

By prioritizing conversation in your social media marketing strategy, you can foster stronger relationships with your audience, increase brand loyalty, and drive meaningful engagement that ultimately leads to business growth and success.

5. Community

Building a sense of community around your brand is a powerful way to foster loyalty and advocacy among your audience. Encourage user-generated content by reposting customer photos and testimonials, hosting contests and giveaways, and creating branded hashtags for your followers to use. By involving your audience in the creation and sharing of content, you can turn them into brand ambassadors who help spread the word about your products and services. Additionally, creating exclusive groups or communities on platforms like Facebook or LinkedIn can provide a space for your most loyal customers to connect with each other and with your brand.

community

Incorporating community into your social media marketing strategy involves building relationships, fostering collaboration, and providing a platform for your audience to connect with each other and with your brand. Here’s how the community can be applied:

  • Create a Sense of Belonging: Develop a welcoming and inclusive environment where your audience feels valued, respected, and connected. Encourage participation and collaboration among community members to foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie.
  • Facilitate Interaction: Provide opportunities for your audience to engage with each other and with your brand through discussions, forums, and user-generated content. Encourage the sharing of ideas, experiences, and insights to strengthen the community bond.
  • Acknowledge and Appreciate: Recognize and appreciate the contributions of community members by highlighting their achievements, featuring user-generated content, or hosting user spotlight interviews. This reinforces a sense of belonging and encourages continued participation.
  • Provide Value: Offer valuable resources, information, or exclusive benefits to your community members as a reward for their engagement and loyalty. This could include access to premium content, early product launches, or special discounts.
  • Listen and Respond: Actively listen to the needs, concerns, and feedback of your community members and respond promptly and thoughtfully. Addressing their queries or resolving their issues demonstrates that you value their input and are committed to their satisfaction.
  • Encourage Advocacy: Empower your community members to become advocates for your brand by providing them with the tools and resources to share their positive experiences with others. Encourage user-generated content, reviews, and referrals to amplify your brand’s reach and impact.
  • Promote Collaboration: Foster collaboration and co-creation among community members by organizing collaborative projects, contests, or challenges. This not only encourages engagement but also strengthens the bonds within the community and promotes a sense of ownership.

By prioritizing community building in your social media marketing strategy, you can create a loyal and engaged audience that actively supports your brand, advocates on your behalf, and contributes to your long-term success. A thriving community not only enhances brand loyalty but also serves as a valuable asset for driving brand awareness, growth, and innovation.

6. Conversion

Ultimately, the goal of social media marketing is to drive conversions—whether that’s in the form of website visits, leads, or sales. To maximize your conversion rate, it’s essential to optimize your social media profiles and content for your desired outcome. Include clear calls-to-action (CTAs) in your posts and bio sections, such as “Shop Now,” “Sign Up,” or “Learn More,” to prompt users to take the next step. Use trackable links and analytics tools to monitor the performance of your social media campaigns and identify areas for improvement. By continuously refining your approach based on data and insights, you can optimize your conversion rate and maximize the return on your social media investment.

Applying conversion to your social media marketing strategy involves guiding your audience through the customer journey, from awareness to action, and optimizing your content and messaging to drive desired outcomes. Here’s how conversion can be applied:

Conversion-focused strategies help you capitalize on the engagement and interactions fostered on social media platforms, turning them into meaningful outcomes that contribute to your bottom line.

7. Curation

In addition to creating original content, curating relevant content from other sources can help enrich your social media presence and provide additional value to your audience. Share articles, videos, and other resources from industry influencers, thought leaders, and reputable publications to showcase your expertise and stay up-to-date with the latest trends and developments in your industry. Just be sure to give proper credit to the original creators and add your own insights or commentary to provide context for why you’re sharing the content. Curating content not only saves you time and resources but also demonstrates your commitment to providing valuable information to your audience.

curation-in-social-media-marketing

Curation involves selecting and sharing relevant and high-quality content from external sources to supplement your own original content. Here’s how it can be applied to your social media marketing strategy:

  • Diversify Content: Curation allows you to diversify your content mix by incorporating content from a variety of sources such as industry publications, thought leaders, or reputable websites. This enriches your social media feed and provides your audience with a broader range of insights and perspectives.
  • Position Yourself as a Resource: By curating valuable content from trusted sources, you position yourself as a knowledgeable and trustworthy resource within your industry or niche. Your audience will appreciate the valuable information you provide, even if it’s not directly from your own brand.
  • Engage Your Audience: Curated content can spark conversations and interactions with your audience. When sharing curated content, add your own commentary or questions to encourage engagement and discussion among your followers.
  • Save Time and Resources: Curating content allows you to leverage existing resources and expertise without the need to create everything from scratch. This can save time and resources while still providing valuable content to your audience.
  • Build Relationships: When you curate content from other creators or brands, you have the opportunity to build relationships and collaborations within your industry. Tagging or mentioning the original creators when sharing their content can help foster connections and potential partnerships.
  • Stay Current and Relevant: Social media moves quickly, and it can be challenging to keep up with the latest trends and news. Curating content allows you to stay current and relevant by sharing timely and topical information with your audience.
  • Maintain Consistency: While curation involves sharing content from external sources, it still contributes to the consistency of your social media presence. By curating content that aligns with your brand’s values and interests, you reinforce your brand identity and messaging.

Overall, curation is a valuable strategy for enhancing your social media marketing efforts by providing valuable content, engaging your audience, and building relationships within your industry. • Consider Content Type: Different types of content may perform better at specific times. For example, visual content might be more engaging during leisure hours, while informative posts may gain traction during business hours. Tailor your posting schedule accordingly.
  • Utilize Scheduling Tools: Take advantage of social media scheduling tools to plan and automate your posts. These tools allow you to maintain a consistent presence without the need for constant manual posting.
  • Be Mindful of Time Zones: If your audience is spread across various time zones, consider scheduling posts at times that cater to different regions. This ensures that your content reaches a global audience without favoring one time zone over another.
  • Monitor and Adjust: Regularly monitor the performance of your posts and adjust your schedule based on the insights gained. Social media trends and audience behavior may change, requiring you to adapt your posting strategy accordingly.
  • Holiday and Event Planning: Plan your posting schedule around holidays and relevant events. Aligning your content with specific occasions can boost engagement and tap into trending conversations.

By adhering to these essential dos for optimizing your posting schedule, businesses can enhance the visibility and effectiveness of their social media marketing efforts. Understanding when and how to reach your audience maximizes the impact of your content, drives better engagement, and ultimately contributes to the success of your overall social media strategy.

7. Utilize Analytics

Utilizing analytics is a fundamental aspect of an effective social media marketing strategy. The essential dos for leveraging analytics in your social media efforts include:

utilize-analytics

  • Set Clear Goals and Objectives: Before diving into analytics, establish clear goals and objectives for your social media marketing. This could include increasing brand awareness, driving website traffic, or boosting engagement. Having defined goals provides a framework for what to measure.
  • Choose Relevant Metrics: Identify and focus on key performance indicators (KPIs) that align with your goals. Metrics such as engagement rates, click-through rates, conversion rates, and follower growth can provide valuable insights into the success of your social media campaigns.
  • Use Platform Analytics Tools: Each social media platform offers its own set of analytics tools. Familiarize yourself with these tools to access platform-specific insights. These tools often provide data on audience demographics, post reach, and engagement, allowing for targeted adjustments to your strategy.
  • Regularly Review Data: Consistently review your analytics data to track the performance of your social media efforts. Regular monitoring allows you to identify trends, measure the effectiveness of campaigns, and make data-driven decisions for ongoing optimization.
  • A/B Testing: Conduct A/B testing by creating variations of your content and comparing their performance. This allows you to understand what resonates best with your audience and refine your content strategy accordingly.
  • Track Conversions: If your social media goals include driving conversions, use analytics to track the customer journey from social media engagement to conversion. Understanding how social media contributes to your business objectives is crucial for measuring its overall impact.
  • Audience Insights: Utilize analytics to gain insights into your audience’s behaviour and preferences. This information helps you tailor your content to better resonate with your target demographic, leading to improved engagement.
  • Competitor Analysis: Compare your social media performance with that of your competitors. Analyzing their strategies and success can provide valuable benchmarks and inspiration for enhancing your own social media presence.
  • Adapt Strategies Based on Insights: Be willing to adapt your social media strategies based on the insights gained from analytics. If certain content types or posting times consistently perform better, adjust your approach to capitalize on what works best for your audience.
  • Invest in Advanced Analytics Tools: Consider using advanced analytics tools to gain deeper insights and more sophisticated data analysis. These tools can provide a holistic view of your social media performance, helping you make informed decisions for strategic improvements.

By incorporating these essential dos for utilizing analytics, businesses can refine their social media strategies, maximize the impact of their campaigns, and continuously optimize their online presence to achieve better results. Analytics serve as a valuable compass, guiding marketers towards more effective and efficient social media marketing practices.

Top 7 Don’ts for Social Media Marketing

1. Over-Promotion

Over-promoting is a critical “don’t” in social media marketing, as it can lead to audience disengagement and a negative perception of your brand. The essential don’ts for avoiding over-promotion in social media marketing include:

over-promotion

  • Balance Content Types: Avoid an excessive focus on promotional content. Strive for a balanced mix of content types, including informative, entertaining, and engaging posts. Over-promoting products or services can make your feed appear one-dimensional and may turn off your audience.
  • Frequency Matters: Be mindful of the frequency of promotional posts. Posting too often about your products or services can overwhelm your audience and dilute the impact of your messaging. Aim for a varied content calendar to maintain interest.
  • Value Over Sales Pitch: Prioritize providing value to your audience over constant sales pitches. Share content that educates, entertains, or solves problems for your followers. Building a relationship based on value creates a more positive and receptive audience.
  • Avoid Repetition: Steer clear of repetitive promotional messages. Recycling the same sales pitch in multiple posts can come across as monotonous and may lead to audience fatigue. Keep your content fresh and varied to maintain interest.
  • Context Matters: Consider the context of your posts. While promotional content is essential, ensure it aligns with the overall theme of your feed and is presented in a way that feels natural and relevant to your audience.
  • Engage Beyond Promotions: Don’t limit your engagement to promotional posts. Actively participate in conversations, respond to comments, and share user-generated content. Engaging beyond promotions helps in building a genuine connection with your audience.
  • Authenticity is Key: Avoid overly scripted or salesy language. Strive for authenticity in your messaging. Authentic content resonates better with audiences and fosters trust in your brand.
  • Monitor Audience Feedback: Pay attention to audience feedback and reactions. If you notice a decline in engagement or an increase in negative comments, it may be a sign of over-promotion. Use feedback to adjust your strategy and strike a better balance.
  • Utilize Storytelling: Instead of straightforward promotions, incorporate storytelling techniques to convey your brand message. Narratives are often more compelling and emotionally engaging, making your content more shareable and memorable.
  • Diversify Content Goals: Expand your content goals beyond immediate sales. Social media is also about brand building, community engagement, and establishing your brand as an authority in your industry. Don’t solely focus on the transactional aspect.

By avoiding over-promotion and adopting a more balanced and value-driven approach to social media marketing, businesses can build stronger relationships with their audience, foster engagement, and establish a positive brand image that extends beyond mere sales pitches.

2. Ignore Negative Feedback

Ignoring negative feedback is a significant “don’t” in social media marketing, as it can harm your brand reputation and hinder your ability to build trust with your audience. The essential don’ts for handling negative feedback in social media marketing include:

ignore-negative- feedback

  • Respond Timely and Professionally: Avoid ignoring negative comments or reviews. Respond promptly and professionally, addressing the concerns raised by the user. Ignoring negative feedback can give the impression that your brand is indifferent or unresponsive.
  • Acknowledge the Issue: Don’t dismiss or downplay the concerns expressed by the user. Acknowledge the problem and express empathy. Demonstrating understanding shows that you value customer feedback and are committed to resolving issues.
  • Take Conversations Offline: Avoid engaging in lengthy public discussions about customer complaints. Encourage the user to continue the conversation privately through direct messages or email. This helps maintain a professional image and prevents further escalation in a public forum.
  • Avoid Deleting Negative Comments: Deleting negative comments may be tempting, but it’s generally not recommended. Doing so can be perceived as censorship and may exacerbate the issue. Instead, address the concerns openly and transparently.
  • Provide Solutions: Don’t just acknowledge the problem—offer practical solutions. Whether it’s a refund, replacement, or further assistance, demonstrating your commitment to resolving issues positively impacts your brand’s reputation.
  • Learn from Feedback: Negative feedback often holds valuable insights. Avoid disregarding it; instead, use it as an opportunity to learn and improve. Analyze recurring issues and consider implementing changes to address underlying problems.
  • Maintain a Positive Tone: Even in the face of criticism, maintain a positive and constructive tone in your responses. Avoid becoming defensive or confrontational, as this can escalate the situation and create a negative perception of your brand.
  • Apologize Sincerely: If your brand has made a mistake, don’t shy away from offering a sincere apology. Taking responsibility for errors and demonstrating a commitment to making amends can positively influence how your brand is perceived.
  • Educate and Communicate Changes: If negative feedback highlights areas for improvement, use it as an opportunity to communicate changes or updates. Sharing information about how you’re addressing concerns showcases transparency and a dedication to continuous improvement.
  • Monitor and Learn: Don’t treat negative feedback as isolated incidents. Continuously monitor feedback trends and use them as a source of valuable information for refining your products, services, and customer interactions.

By actively addressing and learning from negative feedback, businesses can turn challenging situations into opportunities for improvement and showcase a commitment to customer satisfaction. Ignoring negative comments, on the other hand, can lead to reputational damage and erode customer trust over time.

3. Inconsistent Posting

Inconsistent posting is a significant “don’t” in social media marketing, as it can undermine your brand’s visibility, engagement, and overall effectiveness on social platforms. The essential don’ts for avoiding inconsistent posting in social media marketing include:

inconsistent-posting

  • Maintain a Regular Schedule: Avoid irregular posting patterns that can confuse or disengage your audience. Consistency is key in social media, so establish a regular posting schedule that aligns with the behaviour and expectations of your target audience.
  • Plan Content in Advance: Don’t rely solely on spontaneous posting. Plan your content in advance to ensure a steady stream of posts. This helps maintain a cohesive and strategic approach to your social media marketing efforts.
  • Utilize Scheduling Tools: Resist the temptation to post everything manually each day. Instead, leverage scheduling tools to plan and automate your posts. This ensures a consistent flow of content, even during busy periods or unexpected events.
  • Align with Business Goals: Inconsistent posting can lead to a lack of alignment with your overall business goals. Don’t treat social media as an afterthought; integrate it into your broader marketing strategy and maintain a posting schedule that supports your objectives.
  • Avoid Lengthy Gaps: Don’t allow extended periods of silence on your social media channels. Lengthy gaps between posts can result in decreased visibility and reduced engagement. Keep your audience interested and active by consistently providing valuable content.
  • Diversify Content Types: Inconsistency in content types may lead to a monotonous feed. Avoid sharing similar content repeatedly; instead, diversify your posts with a mix of images, videos, infographics, and other engaging formats to keep your audience interested.
  • Remain Platform-Specific: Different social media platforms have unique user behaviors and optimal posting frequencies. Don’t adopt a one-size-fits-all approach; tailor your posting schedule to each platform to maximize visibility and engagement.
  • Monitor Analytics: Ignoring analytics is a common mistake. Regularly monitor performance metrics to understand when your audience is most active and which types of content resonate best. Use these insights to refine your posting schedule for better results.
  • Avoid Inconsistent Messaging: Ensure that your messaging is consistent across posts. Don’t convey conflicting information or change your brand voice abruptly. Consistent messaging builds brand identity and fosters trust with your audience.
  • Be Mindful of Time Zones: If your target audience spans different time zones, consider this in your posting schedule. Don’t overlook the potential impact of time zone differences on when your audience is most active; schedule posts accordingly to reach a broader demographic.

By avoiding inconsistent posting and maintaining a well-planned, strategic approach to social media marketing, businesses can enhance their online presence, keep their audience engaged, and achieve more consistent and predictable results over time.

4. Overuse Hashtags

Overusing hashtags is a crucial “don’t” in social media marketing, as it can diminish the effectiveness of your content and potentially alienate your audience. The essential don’ts for avoiding the overuse of hashtags in social media marketing include:

overuse-hashtags

  • Quality Over Quantity: Resist the temptation to include an excessive number of hashtags in your posts. Instead, focus on quality by choosing relevant and meaningful hashtags that truly reflect the content and resonate with your target audience.
  • Avoid Spammy Hashtags: Overloading your posts with irrelevant or overly generic hashtags may be perceived as spammy. Avoid using hashtags solely for the sake of visibility; opt for those genuinely related to your content and industry.
  • Consider Platform Norms: Different social media platforms have varying norms and etiquette regarding the use of hashtags. Don’t apply the same hashtag strategy across all platforms; adapt your approach based on each platform’s guidelines and user behaviour.
  • Relevance Matters: Ensure that the hashtags you use are directly relevant to the content of your post. Don’t include hashtags that are unrelated or misleading, as this can lead to disengagement and negatively impact your credibility.
  • Limit the Total Count: While some platforms allow a higher number of hashtags, it’s essential to set limits. Don’t overwhelm your audience with an excessive number of hashtags; instead, focus on a concise selection that adds value to your content.
  • Incorporate Branded Hashtags Thoughtfully: If using branded hashtags, do so thoughtfully and sparingly. Don’t flood your posts with too many branded hashtags; incorporate them strategically to encourage user participation and brand recognition.
  • Mindful Placement: Avoid placing hashtags in the main body of your post if it disrupts readability or appears forced. Instead, consider incorporating hashtags at the end of your post or within the comments to maintain a clean and aesthetically pleasing presentation.
  • Research Popular and Niche Hashtags: Striking a balance between popular and niche hashtags is essential. Don’t exclusively use highly competitive hashtags; also incorporate specific and less saturated hashtags to reach a more targeted audience.
  • Monitor Trend Relevance: Trending hashtags can boost visibility, but their relevance is fleeting. Don’t use trending hashtags if they do not align with your content or brand, as it may come across as opportunistic and insincere.
  • Regularly Review Hashtag Performance: Don’t set and forget your hashtag strategy. Regularly review the performance of the hashtags you use and adjust your approach based on engagement metrics. This allows you to refine your strategy for optimal results.

By avoiding the overuse of hashtags and adopting a strategic and thoughtful approach, businesses can enhance the discoverability of their content and engage with a more targeted audience. Quality, relevance, and mindful hashtag usage contribute to a more effective and authentic social media marketing presence.

5. Ignore Emerging Trends

Ignoring emerging trends is a significant “don’t” in social media marketing, as it can lead to missed opportunities, decreased relevance, and a stagnant online presence. The essential don’ts for social media marketing regarding emerging trends include:

ignore-emerging-trends

  • Stay Current: Avoid the mistake of neglecting emerging trends in the dynamic landscape of social media. Failing to stay current can result in your content becoming outdated, making it challenging to capture the attention of your target audience.
  • Monitor Industry Changes: Don’t disregard shifts and developments within your industry. Stay vigilant about emerging trends, technologies, and consumer behaviors that may impact your business. Adapting to these changes can give you a competitive edge in the social media space.
  • Participate in Conversations: Ignoring ongoing conversations and trends within your niche can isolate your brand. Actively participate in relevant discussions, engage with trending topics, and contribute valuable insights to showcase your brand’s awareness and expertise.
  • Embrace New Content Formats: Resist the urge to stick to familiar content formats. Social media platforms often introduce new features and formats; don’t shy away from experimenting with them. Embracing video content, live streaming, and interactive features can help keep your content fresh and engaging.
  • Adapt to Algorithm Changes: Social media algorithms frequently evolve to enhance user experience. Don’t ignore these changes; instead, adapt your content strategy to align with algorithmic preferences. This ensures that your content remains visible to your audience.
  • Explore New Platforms: New social media platforms continually emerge, each with its unique audience and features. Don’t dismiss these platforms without exploration. Assess their relevance to your target demographic and consider incorporating them into your marketing strategy if they align with your goals.
  • Closely Follow Consumer Behavior: Neglecting shifts in consumer behavior can lead to disconnected marketing efforts. Regularly analyze your audience’s behavior on social media, paying attention to changes in preferences, usage patterns, and content consumption habits.
  • Utilize Influencer Marketing: Overlooking the power of influencer marketing is a common mistake. Influencers often play a significant role in shaping trends and influencing consumer opinions. Don’t ignore the potential of collaborating with influencers who align with your brand values.
  • Adaptive Content Strategies: A rigid content strategy that ignores emerging trends can become stale. Avoid this by incorporating adaptive content strategies that allow your brand to capitalize on new trends and maintain relevance with your audience.
  • Evaluate Data and Analytics: Ignoring data and analytics is a missed opportunity for optimization. Regularly evaluate performance metrics to identify trends in audience engagement, content effectiveness, and overall social media impact. Use these insights to refine your strategy.

By actively avoiding the neglect of emerging trends, businesses can position themselves to seize new opportunities, remain relevant in their industries, and maintain a dynamic and engaging social media presence that resonates with their target audience.

6. Automate Without Personalization

Automating social media marketing without incorporating personalization is a crucial “don’t” that can undermine the effectiveness of your strategy. The essential don’ts for social media marketing automation without personalization include:

automate -without -personalization

  • Generic Automation: Avoid the pitfall of generic, one-size-fits-all automated content. Automation tools can streamline processes, but using them without personalization risks delivering content that lacks relevance and fails to resonate with your audience.
  • Impersonal Messaging: Don’t rely solely on automated messages that lack a personal touch. Whether it’s responding to comments, direct messages, or scheduled posts, incorporating a human element and personalization helps in building genuine connections with your audience.
  • Overly Scheduled Posts: Resisting the urge to over-schedule posts without considering real-time events or trends is essential. While automation can save time, it’s crucial to stay adaptable and responsive to current happenings to maintain a relevant and engaging social media presence.
  • Neglecting Audience Segmentation: Ignoring the importance of audience segmentation in automated campaigns is a mistake. Tailoring content to specific segments of your audience based on demographics, behaviors, or preferences ensures that your messages resonate more effectively.
  • Forgetting the Human Touch: Automated responses and messages should not completely replace human interaction. Avoid neglecting the human touch by periodically engaging directly with your audience, responding to individual comments, and participating in conversations authentically.
  • Ignoring Real-Time Engagement: Automated posting tools are valuable, but don’t overlook the importance of real-time engagement. Monitor your social media channels actively, respond promptly to comments, and participate in trending conversations to demonstrate your brand’s responsiveness.
  • Cookie-Cutter Content: Refrain from using a cookie-cutter approach to content creation and distribution. Each social media platform and audience segment may require a unique strategy. Customizing content for different platforms and audience preferences ensures a more personalized and effective approach.
  • Failure to Adjust Strategy: Social media trends and algorithms evolve, and automated strategies need to adapt accordingly. Don’t set and forget your automated processes; regularly assess performance metrics and adjust your strategy to align with emerging trends and shifts in audience behavior.
  • Automated Direct Messages (DMs): Using automated direct messages without personalization can be off-putting to users. Instead of generic automated DMs, consider sending personalized messages based on user interactions or specific triggers to enhance the user experience.
  • Impersonalized User-Generated Content (UGC): If incorporating user-generated content into your strategy, avoid using it in an impersonalized manner. Acknowledge and thank users individually for their contributions, creating a sense of community and appreciation.

By steering clear of social media marketing automation without personalization, businesses can foster stronger connections with their audience, increase engagement, and maintain a more authentic and humanized brand presence on social platforms.

Personalization remains a crucial element in ensuring that automated processes enhance rather than detract from the overall user experience.

7. Neglect Platform-Specific Features

Neglecting platform-specific features is a significant “don’t” in social media marketing that can hinder your ability to maximize the effectiveness of your campaigns. The essential don’ts for social media marketing regarding platform-specific features include:

neglect-platform-specific-features

  • One-Size-Fits-All Approach: Avoid adopting a one-size-fits-all strategy across different social media platforms. Each platform has unique features, algorithms, and user behaviours. Neglecting these platform-specific nuances can result in suboptimal performance.
  • Ignoring Algorithm Changes: Social media platforms regularly update their algorithms, affecting the visibility of content. Don’t disregard these changes; stay informed and adapt your content strategy to align with the latest algorithmic preferences for each platform.
  • Neglecting Video Content: Video content is highly favoured on many social media platforms. Neglecting the use of video or underestimating its potential can limit your reach and engagement. Embrace platform-specific video features to enhance your content strategy.
  • Avoiding Live Streaming: Live streaming is a dynamic and interactive way to engage with your audience. Don’t overlook or shy away from the live streaming features available on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Live content can create a sense of immediacy and connection.
  • Underutilizing Story Features: Many platforms offer story features that allow you to share temporary, engaging content. Neglecting or underutilizing these features can be a missed opportunity to connect with your audience in a more casual and real-time manner.
  • Ignoring Polls and Interactive Elements: Neglecting interactive features, such as polls, quizzes, and interactive stickers, deprives your audience of engaging content experiences. Leverage these features to encourage participation and boost overall engagement.
  • Failure to Optimize Ad Formats: If utilizing paid advertising, don’t use the same ad formats across all platforms without optimization. Each platform offers unique ad formats and targeting options; tailoring your ads to fit the strengths of each platform enhances their effectiveness.
  • Not Adapting to Visual Trends: Visual trends often differ across platforms. Neglecting to adapt your visual content to fit the trends and preferences of each platform can make your content seem out of touch or less appealing to your target audience.
  • Overlooking LinkedIn Features: If your target audience includes professionals and businesses, don’t overlook the features offered by LinkedIn. Neglecting LinkedIn’s unique capabilities, such as professional networking and B2B marketing tools, limits your ability to reach a specific demographic.
  • Ignoring Platform Analytics: Each social media platform provides analytics tools to help you understand your audience and measure performance. Don’t ignore these analytics; regularly review platform-specific insights to make informed decisions and optimize your strategy.

By avoiding the neglect of platform-specific features, businesses can leverage the unique strengths of each social media platform to enhance their marketing efforts. Embracing the distinct characteristics and tools offered by each platform contributes to a more targeted, engaging, and effective social media strategy.

You can streamline this process by leveraging tools like Buffer Reply or Agorapulse to manage multiple social media accounts efficiently.
  • Add Open-Ended Questions in Captions: Injecting open-ended questions into your social media posts and captions prompts users to share their opinions and experiences, fostering engagement and providing valuable feedback on content preferences. Whether inquiring about productivity hacks, seeking color preferences for a new product, or gauging excitement for an upcoming event, these questions stimulate discussions and enhance audience involvement.
  • Acknowledge and Appreciate User-Generated Content (UGC) and Shares: Celebrate your followers’ content featuring your products or services by showing genuine appreciation. Like, comment, and reshare user-generated content (UGC) when suitable, and consider creating a branded hashtag for easy tracking and engagement. This practice can reinforce loyalty among existing followers while attracting new ones through positive word-of-mouth marketing.

Engaging thoughtfully and promptly with your audience is vital in nurturing a thriving social media presence.

To seamlessly integrate customer service into your social media strategy, you can implement these action steps:

  • Dedicate a specific time each day or week to check and respond to incoming messages and comments on all your social media channels.
  • Develop a system to collect and organize positive feedback from various sources (emails, website forms, UGC) for easy access in future promotions.
  • Integrate UGC into your regular posting schedule to feature and encourage more positive reviews.

By prioritizing customer service within your social media strategy, you enhance the experience for existing followers and attract new ones who value a responsive and attentive brand. Remember, satisfied customers are likely to share their positive experiences, contributing to organic growth for your company. Excellent customer service is foundational for a successful social media growth plan.

7. Forge Partnerships with Complementary Brands

Elevate your social media game by teaming up with non-competing brands for joint campaigns. This mutually beneficial approach opens up avenues for increased exposure, tapping into new audiences with shared interests who may still need to become familiar with each other’s products or offerings.

complementary-brands

Follow these steps to identify potential partners for innovative cross-promotional ideas:

1) Identify Compatible Partners: Research businesses targeting similar demographics or sharing common interests like yours. You can use tools like SimilarWeb or BuzzSumo for these studies. Once you have identified your partners, propose collaborations highlighting the advantages of working together and suggest specific joint projects.

2) Engage in Collaborative Initiatives:

  • Giveaways: Conduct joint giveaways featuring prizes relevant to each brand’s niche. Promote the contest across all participating social media channels using branded hashtags to maximize engagement and attract new followers.
  • Social Media Takeovers: Grant permission to your partner brands to access your social media accounts, and vice versa, for content sharing. This dynamic exchange provides fresh, captivating content for both audiences, exposing businesses to new followers.
  • Joint Webinars/Live Streams: Organize webinars or live streams with partner brands to share knowledge and insights. This collaborative effort enhances visibility for both parties and offers a platform to establish authority and connect with new audiences.

Remember, the key to successful collaborations lies in aligning with brands that share similar values and audience demographics. By joining forces on these joint campaigns, you achieve fantastic exposure and organically grow your social media following.

8. Harness the Power of Influencers

Build connections with social media influencers who share common values and audience demographics to cultivate genuine endorsements for your brand, building trust and credibility among your potential followers. This, in turn, leads to heightened conversion rates.

power-of-influencers

You can maximize the effectiveness of influencer partnerships with the following strategies:

  • Thoroughly Research Relevant Influencers: Identify social media influencers in your industry using tools like BuzzSumo, Influencer Marketing Hub, or Instagram’s search function. Look for those with a substantial following who align with your brand’s values.
  • Negotiate Mutually Beneficial Agreements: Craft collaboration agreements that benefit both parties. This may involve sponsored posts, product reviews, giveaways, or affiliate marketing arrangements. Clearly define expectations, including content creation deadlines and guidelines for maintaining brand consistency.

Types of influencer collaborations include:

  • Sponsored Posts: Remunerate influencers for creating content featuring your products or services on their social media platforms.
  • Product Reviews: Provide influencers with complimentary samples in exchange for honest reviews.
  • Giveaways: Collaborate on contests where participants engage with specified content for a chance to win.
  • Affiliate Marketing: Establish unique referral codes/links for influencers to earn commissions on sales generated through their promotions.

Emphasize authenticity in your collaborations to resonate effectively with your target audience. Genuine partnerships are crucial for maximizing the impact of influencer collaborations on social media growth. Harness the influence of strategic partnerships to expand your reach and elevate your brand’s visibility in new and meaningful ways.

9. Use Strategic Paid Advertising for Optimal Results

Strategic use of paid advertising platforms like Facebook and Instagram allows you to connect with broader audiences through precise targeting based on demographics, interests, and behaviour. This approach enhances the likelihood of attracting authentic, organic social media followers who are genuinely interested in your products and offerings.

paid-advertising

Before launching your ad campaigns, establish clear objectives, whether it’s for boosting brand awareness or driving sales conversions, and then align your budget with these goals by considering factors like cost-per-click (CPC) or cost per thousand impressions (CPM). This will help you ensure efficient resource allocation. Conduct experiments with diverse ad formats and target segments to enhance paid advertising effectiveness. Test carousel ads versus single-image ads, explore different social media platforms and fine-tune audience targeting options by adjusting parameters like age range, geographic location, interests, or behaviours for optimal results.

Use these two methods to refine your ads:

  • A/B Testing for Precision: Employ A/B testing to refine your ads systematically. Change one variable at a time to identify the most effective elements within specific contexts or target demographics, leading to improved overall performance outcomes.
  • Data-Driven Optimization: Regularly monitor ad campaign analytics reports from social media platforms’ in-built interfaces and third-party tools to gather insights. You can use the gathered insights to calculate the returns on investment (ROIs) and adjust your ad campaign strategies to ensure continual improvement.

With the right strategic paid advertising, you can efficiently expand your social media following and elevate your brand’s visibility.

10. Evaluate Metrics and Fine-Tune Your Strategies

Consistently reviewing key performance indicators (KPIs) such as social media follower growth, engagement metrics, and click-through rates is vital for informed decision-making in shaping the future direction of your social media campaigns.

  • Monitoring click-through rates (CTR) for shared links assesses how effectively they drive traffic to your website or landing pages.

10 Easy Ways to Write a Unique Instagram Bio

Take your Journal and start writing notes.

#1 Optimize the Instagram name

Of course I know, you definitely have a profile name for your instagram page. But check that, Is your name finely combined with your profile and Have you used any searchable keyword or any service title of your page…? If not Follow these steps to create a noticeable Instagram profile name.

  • Find a Suitable Name that represents your Brand or give your full name.
  • Let a nice space and don’t add any emojis or emoticons.
  • Mention your job title after the name.
optimize the instagram name

By giving your full name along with your job title or Brand name with the service you provide, you can increase the chance for people find you when they search. Also it introduces about you and your services to new visitors who visits your profile via algorithms.

For Example, consider that you’re a Fitness Coach and your name is John Fredrick. So your Instagram profile name would be “John Fredrick – Fitness Coach”. Now people can easily found you when your profile name appears while they type keywords in the search bar, Because of you mentioned that you’re a fitness coach, people immediately tap on your profile, even before they hit search.

#2 Clearly mention your service and who it’s for.

When you don’t let audience to know about your services how would they determine whether your page is necessary for them or not…? Giving information about your services can help your audience understand what exactly you do. Before you mention your services you have to know who’s your target audience and make sure that they get the information correctly. To achieve this prepare a list with these data.

clearly mention your service
  • Services you provide.
  • Your target audience.

and then index a service with the high demand and huge audience. after all, “tadaaa,” you got the Niche statement to put in your instagram bio.

#3 Add some Intentional Details.

After people entered your profile they’ll be definitely curious about your achievements or some fun facts about yourself. By mentioning above details you can hold up your audience and lead them to take a look at your informative profile. Moreover you can develop your Authority by telling people about your achievements & this may increase your reputation among the audience.

add some intentional details

For example mention about your YouTube channel If you have one with some millions of subscribers. So the audience will become curious about, why you’re having this much of followers, then they’ll conclude that you have something valuable. From this attention You’ve gained you could increase your followers.

#4 Give a fully functioning Link of your Website.

Web pages are the most mandatory things when it comes to marketing your services through social media. Would you prefer to easily tap on some text and order something or physically approach a restaurant and buy a pizza after waiting in an aisle for hours…? Think about it. Obviously you’ll choose first option when you have really tight schedule. To make people instantly buy your service with no effort immediately after they’ve noticed your service, You should have a website which is providing your services to the customer.

give a fully functioning link of your website

In other words, If you want to make sure that your audience are scrolling around rest of your social media profiles, you should leave a link beneath your instagram bio.

Unfortunately instagram allows users to mention only one link in their instagram bio. But don’t worry you can use tools like LINKR.BIO to provide all of your social media links through one autogenerated link.

#5 Add Call-To-Action with indicating your link.

Humans can be stimulated by asking them to do something which is they’re hesitating to do. Yes! you can ask your audience to do something by indicating your link. But you have to be aware of what you’re asking. Your call-to-action segment should related to the type of the link you mentioned.

add call to action with indicating your link

For example, If your link is about to direct your audience to a shopping page, Then you should mention an action like “click to shop your favorite one”. If your website is providing some educational resources then consider adding statements like “learn how”.

Apart from above 05 additional tips I’ll explain 05 special tactics for help you to stand out from some traditional pages.

#6 Add the Category of your page beneath your profile name.

This is one of the common mis consumption that only providing your service information intentionally in your instagram bio is enough. It’s not like that, Instagram algorithms can detect and recommend your page to the suitable audience when you’ve categorized your page by customizing the additional profile settings.

add the category of your page beneath your profile name

And also it allows your audience to recognize what kind of page is this by just a glance. You can customize your page’s category through profile editing options.

#7 Organize your instagram bio into separate lines.

Do you like to read a book or article that having sentences here and there with no layout or order..?Who loves to read such kind of mess. That same thing can applicable for instagram bio. Because no audience wants to even look at a chaotic unprofessional instagram bio.

organize your instagram bio into separate lines

Arranging your bio line by line downwards can improve the possibility of audience tapping on follow button. And also it gives a clean and high professional look to your instagram bio.

#8 Use Emojis.

Being so colorful is an indication of Happiness and Positivity. When people saw multiple colors they can immediately feel a positive vibe inside them. So make your audience’s day by adding colors to their mind. Most importantly Emojis shows the clear idea of what that particular line is about, even before they fully read it.

use emojis

#9 Tag related external profiles.

Because of Instagram allows one user to create numerous accounts, Most of you may have multiple accounts for various purposes. Link them to your instagram bio with the additional information about it. Sometimes you might have your own instagram profile, while you’re managing your business profile. In this case you can tag your personal profile in your business page with the declaration of FOUNDER or OWNER.

tag related external profiles

#10 Use Instagram stories highlight.

Most of the people put their achievements and memorable events in the Instagram stories. Approximately 86.6% of Instagram users post stories in a Daily basis (EarthWeb 2022). Story highlights are more convenient that audience can easily summarize your achievements with some TAPS. So utilize your stories to inspire audience by consciously grouping them in to Highlight.

use instagram stories highlight

Unlike disappearing Instagram stories, Highlights can last until you remove them. Don’t forget to add a unique cover for your highlights.

  • Then in next line he gave his E-mail address to allow other international brands approach him for paid promotions.

LinkedIn API Version 2.0 – 2019

LinkedIn API version 2.0 has the latest advanced technology associated with APIs and for authentication, they introduced OAuth, 2.0. From 1st March 2019, Developers who have been using LinkedIn APIs are requested to shift to LinkedIn API Version 2.0. This newest update will enhance numerous options through the developer’s program. LinkedIn Developers program will allow apps and website owners to let their users have a personalized experience on their site and also allow them to use their professional identities for third-party services and share outside content from other apps and websites.

By Signing In with LinkedIn account users can also log in to other apps using their LinkedIn profiles data. API only acknowledged the “Lite Profile” data with limited profile arenas. LinkedIn users will be able to share links of other sites through their LinkedIn network. However, this API has been already available in Version 1.

For handling company pages, APIs version 1 was used. But version 2.0 will be combined with LinkedIn marketing developer Program which means only the developers who will take part in the marketing developer program will get permission to access API version 2.0.

LinkedIn is now disapproving of many other old features that are not popular among its users. Let’s have a look at them.

1) Verification:  OAuth 1.0 will no longer be available and developers will have to use OAuth 2.0. This version meets all the business standards and by now used by numerous developers.

2) Software Development Tools: JavaScript and Mobile SDKs were removed from March 1. Now developers required to move to OAuth 2.0 from apps directly

3) Plugins: LinkedIn is disparaging the Member Profile, Company Profile, Company Insider and Alumni Tool plugins, or any other plugin used to enrich the functionality of the website by producing drop-in code.

After these changes have been implemented in the front-end design, there are expectations that the developers portal will also be reshaped, which will allow managers to access apps so that they can easily discover product information and read documents.

Facebook Bade Farewell to Explore Feed & Welcomed Closer Together

Facebook Bade Farewell to Explore Feed & Welcomed Closer Together

On the 1st of March 2018, Facebook announced the end of its disastrous Explore Feed experiment, after harsh criticism from users and journalists. October 2017 saw the worldwide launch of an alternative News Feed, named Explore Feed, a feature previously exclusive to Facebook’s app. It aimed to encourage users to stumble upon content that might interest them. When News Feed focuses on posts from family, friends, Liked and Followed pages, Explore Feed displayed content pertaining to a user’s interests.

news_feed

The content on Explore Feed wasn’t entirely random, as it included items that a user had previously shown interest in, or that were popular among their friends. With this update, Facebook aimed to increase the spending time of online users. In fact, this social media giant regularly introduces new features as alternatives to News Feed. However, most users never veer from News Feed to actually discover such features.

An unexpected update

Surprisingly, in an isolated experiment rolled out in six countries, namely, Sri Lanka, Guatemala, Slovakia, Serbia, Bolivia, and Cambodia, a different variant of Explore Feed was implemented. All content other than posts from friends and family was displayed under this experimental feed. Consequently, blindsiding businesses and news organizations in test countries, and leading to a massive rise in misinformation regarding test product.

Adam Mosseri, Facebook’s head of News Feed, shared through a blog that Their social networking platform frequently tests design changes, new features, and ranking updates. Doing so allows them to understand how Facebook can be transformed for everyone’s benefit. Some changes including Live video, GIFs, and Reactions garner positive feedback and become available to all users. Conversely, some experiments like Explore Feed fail to generate a positive response, or do not meet user requirements and are therefore discarded permanently.

facebook explore feed

According to Mosseri, Explore Feed was launched on a trial basis. Since, surveys and feedback revealed that users wanted to see more updates from family and friends. Subsequently, leading to the conceptualization of two separate feeds, one strictly dedicated to posts from loved ones and the other for updates from Pages.

Facebook operated under the assumption that this change would prioritize a user social interactions. As posts from media, brands, and businesses would no longer feature in News Feed. Post-launch surveys, however, indicated that users were unhappy with this new system. Two feeds hampered chances of connecting with friends and further inconvenienced users when important information was missed, Mosseri added. Therefore, after five months its launch, Facebook pulled the plug on Explore Feed.

Experiment after-effects on Facebook Pages and associated businesses

Critics condemned this Explore Feed experiment labeling it an Orwellian move that significantly increased the circulation of misinformation. Filip Stuhárik, a Slovakian journalist, opined that Facebook seemed unfazed by current happenings in its test countries and disregarded consequences. Using CrowdTangle data he showcased how professional journalists were negatively affected when fake news channels flourished.

Mosseri accepted this criticism because Facebook abruptly changed the social media landscape in six countries without considering its impact on business. Additionally, stakeholders’ input was not heeded and test subjects weren’t adequately informed about this new product. He assured that methods of evaluating countries for test products and communicating about them will be modified. Being the world’s largest social media network, Facebook faces immense scrutiny and pressure from governments and users to create less addictive services to curb the dissemination of false news.

Explore Feed’s failure can also be attributed to the choice of test countries. A majority of users in these countries never explore Facebook’s other features, therefore, the removal of brands, publisher and Page content from News Feed has only reduced organic traffic to businesses.

Stuhárik tweeted that he was pleased with Facebook’s acknowledgment of mistakes and decision to end said experiment. He hopes future experiments will be conducted keeping in mind the current situation of a test country.

According to him, owing to this experiment news media websites stopped relying on Facebook for organic traffic. He predicted that traffic is expected to reduce significantly in the future. Since News Feed will emphasize posts from family and friends over media outlets. Thereby, forcing established businesses to reconsider life after Facebook, and formulate creative ideas to improve traffic and retain loyal audiences.

Cambodian media outlets were also pleased to hear this experiment was called off. Since Facebook has emerged as a prominent platform for political news in the country. Cambodian Prime Minister, Hun Sen, who is up for re-election in July, forced traditional and independent media to shut down, especially for criticizing his government. Hence, Facebook became the sole source of news for Cambodian users, although in light of said update viewership plummeted up to 40%.

It wasn’t just the general users who lost access to reliable news sources, but businesses and other organizations suffered similar losses. For instance, had Cambodian entrepreneur In Vichet launched his online business ‘Little Fashion’ at the beginning of this year instead of 2010, it would have run aground. Since Facebook would have pushed all content from organizations and companies into its Explore Feed.

‘Little Fashion’ an online shopping outlet gained a huge local clientele through Facebook’s News Feed in its initial years. Currently, it is among Cambodia’s most successful e-commerce ventures. Vichet believes that had this update been rolled out a few years ago, it would have proved disastrous for his business. Sellers who depend on this platform for boosting sales and marketing might suffer greatly with any changes to the current News Feed system, he added.

The Cambodian economy is fragile and using them as test subjects when they are not evolved on social media is robbing them of their few opportunities. It has been observed by digital marketing firms that Cambodian businesses using Facebook for marketing were unaware for a month or two during the test phase that their outreach had declined by 60%. Facebook claims that these countries were chosen because there were no other tests being run on them. However, most critics remarked that the political and economic conditions of a country must be considered before conducting experiments that impact business practices.

Latest News Feed updates

Although such experimentation deeply affected the aforementioned countries, only social media managers who understood its full impact were alarmed. Before calling off this test, Facebook hinted that no plans of making Explore Feed global were underway. Simultaneously, they announced another update for News Feed, known as ‘Closer Together’, to address the original problem that ended in an appalling experiment.

This update streamlines News Feed content so a user only sees posts from loved ones and content published by businesses, which have specifically paid for a place on the main feed. Following this update, Cambodian businesses and NGOs that relied on said social media platform have had to make drastic changes in terms of techniques to retain audiences.

https://www.facebook.com/facebook/videos/10156988765141729/

The latest update will emphasize person-to-person engagement while limiting person-to-page engagement. This watered down version of Explore Feed will compel the page managers to modify their techniques and comply with the current algorithm. Facebook knows that to some extent users demand relevant Page content in their News Feed. Therefore, chances of charging for a Page-free News Feed are slim to none.

Over the years Facebook has transformed appreciably so it has been used. Therefore, despite their best efforts to increase interpersonal engagement, messaging apps are currently irreplaceable in this niche.

How to Remove Instagram Ads and Take Control Of Your Photo Feed

instgramstatics_2017

Instagram has become the leading app these days. I know for a fact that while I might survive without Facebook, I won’t be able to do so without Instagram and its posts on adorable puppies, delicious food and travel photos.

Sudden Outburst of Ads

Instagram has surely become better with time, but regular Instagrammers will agree that it was better without the ads that keep popping up on the photo feed these days. Instagram has postponed their decision to introduce ads for a long time now. The IG users weren’t very keen on having adds on their feed, but with Facebook taking over Instagram, it was just a matter of time before the ads appeared on the feed. Instagram runs on users who have signed up to see creative, witty and interesting photo and video posts and the company knows that including ads will kill the charm of the application.

instagram ads

Ads Similar To Photos

Instagram is therefore trying to test new ads with some companies who understand the user profile on the app. They work on putting forward ads that will suit the user and help them out. The advertisements on Instagram appear like regular Instagram photos, something like the advertisements you flip through when you go through a high-end glossy magazine.

Yes, it will be a crime to admit that no one like leafing through the glossy magazines with their advertisements and similarly there are many users on Instagram who don’t mind the ads.

Are the Users Warming Up To The Ads On Instagram?

Given that the advertisements on Instagram aren’t cumbersome and doesn’t break the pattern of the photo feed, there are many who are fine with the intrusion of the ads. Instagram knows that the users are apprehensive and are hence pushing out the ads slowly to prevent the users from being overwhelmed with the sudden change. While some feel that the ads are a necessary evil for the app to continue, the IG users ultimately have the scope to decide how their photo feed looks.

About Instagram Ads

For the ‘Sponsored’ ads on the application, you have the option to hide the content. Instagram clearly states in their policy for the advertisements that aim at showing the user ads from businesses that are interesting and relevant to them and for the same, they use your browsing information from the app and from their parent app, Facebook. Users will also see ads based on the pages and people they follow on the application. In fact, by hiding ads and selecting your option to remove them, you end up offering feedbacks that will go a long way in improving the content of the ads that are released on Instagram.

Instagram allows their users to opt out of seeing certain ads by changing their device settings based on user activity on Instagram and Facebook. Instagram has made it clear that the user information is safe with them and that no advertiser can access the user information.

remove instagram ads

If you are not very keen on seeing the ads on your Instagram feed, then you are in for some luck today! I have an easy trick that will make sure that your photo feed is no longer filled with the sponsored ads and you can breeze through the photos and videos without coming across those annoying ads.

Here are 2 easy ways to remove Instagram ads:

  1. Hide the Ads from Your Feed: Instagram has enabled an option where IG users can ‘hide’ ads and prevent them from popping up on their feed. If you see an ad with the word ‘Sponsored’ written on it, all you have to do is report and hide it. The ‘Sponsored’ ads will have a ‘…’ in the upper right-hand corner. If you don’t want the ads to appear on your feed, all you must do is simply tap on that and click on ‘Hide This.’ The process to hide the ads is similar on both Android and iOS devices.
  2. Report the Ads: Since the developers of the app knew that IG users will go ahead and hide the ads from their feed when they have the option, they were smart enough to tackle the situation. So, when you click on the ellipses and decide to hide the app, you have to choose the reason for the same. IG users usually tend to pick ‘This is not relevant,’ and Instagram comes up with a message stating that it will pick out ads that are more relevant to that particular user. What happens now is that the app will track your activity on the application and find out products and services that might be necessary for you and show you ads for similar products and services. Now, if you don’t want any ads on your feed and it isn’t about them being relevant or not, so you can simply report all the ads as “Inappropriate” and you don’t have to see them ever again.

I tried this trick a week ago, and trust me, I haven’t seen ads on my photo feed for a while now!

Take Control Of Your Feed

Yes, I know some would call be mean for blocking the ads on Instagram since there are more than 500,000 active advertisers on the app per month, but then I don’t want my IG usage being hampered by these ads. I have already seen my Facebook news feed turn into a marketplace with innumerable ads, which often divert me to a new page.

Before You Go!

Many don’t mind the ads on Instagram since it doesn’t break their flow of going through the feed. With this blog, I hope I could provide you all with the option of having the upper hand when it comes to dealing with ads. The power lies with you dear IG users and you decide how your photo feed looks like.

Social Media Management For The Future – 2017 and on!

Social Media Management can be a pain in the all wrong places if you do not execute it in an organized manner.

If you are a Social Media Manager, you would know that it takes a considerable amount of time to do the various, small-small activities. Needless to say, that it is super easy to find yourself distracted and waste a lot of time in the process, all thanks to BuzzFeed,  Upworthy, and Unilad.

If you are like me, then you spend part or almost all your day hopping from Facebook to Twitter to LinkedIn and on and on, checking analytics, strategizing and performing one out of your million tasks.

Back in 2014, Snap Chat was closing three years, and still failing to explain to marketers that it was not a sexting application.

News stories had predictions about Pinterest beating Facebook and Twitter in the race to paid advertisements.

Why Pinterest Ads Will Beat Facebook Ads – Mizz Information

How Pinterest can win advertisers and maybe beat Twitter – Digiday

Live Video Play, Face Swapping, and Auto-play, etc. were all on the horizon, lurking to unleash a different mix into the Social Media we once knew, and truly so. Social Media has evolved at a much faster rate in the last 2 years, than in the last 10 years before that.

history-social-media-2004-2014

As you can see from the image above,

With evolution, comes adaptability and us, Social Media Managers need to keep update with all the new skills this job keeps demanding. So, I want to talk about my key predictions for Social Media Management for the future and the most important skills the future SMM needs to have,

The 9 Key Characteristics of Future Social Media Hero’s

What are the ideal ingredients of a Social Media Manager in 2017? If we were making a list for 2014, it would still be a fairly short list. But, Social Media has evolved frantically with the rise of new technology and wider audience, certain top skills can be seen common in the most successful marketers, and they are:

  • Community Administration:

If you compare all the top brands on Social Media, you will notice that they all have one thing in common – it’s their community. A good Social Media Manager must be able to manage a community, administer it, create connections and also grow the community by connecting the brand to its audience.

  • Customer Service:

If you haven’t realized how important Social Media is for your customer service, then you are surely doing something wrong. According to research, more than 72% customers who complain to a brand on Twitter, expect a response in the next hour. Not to forget the Facebook Business Pages, which have constantly seen an up in Customer Interaction, thanks to the privacy quotient.

  • Content Curation:

The end all and be all of Social Media. Content curation is the savior, especially for businesses that do not have the time and resources to create original content for their social media. It is an important skill to have for an SMM as you need to know what to share and what not to share, and when to share what you share.

  • Relationship Building:

Relationship building is different from Community Management for reasons, because here you need to not only connect with your audience but also with your key influencers. This is a crucial skill, but unfortunately so, this is the most lacking skill for most managers. Proper Relationship building can give you access to, more credibility, larger audience; user generated content, social influence and of course, new leads and customers.

  • Videography:

If you are thinking 2016 has been a massive year for Video, then just wait for 2017. 70% companies state that video is the most important part of their marketing strategy, and 2 out of 3 companies state that video will continue to dominate their marketing spend in the coming years. You need more reason to get this skill into you DNA? Facebook Live Videos are going to kill it in 2017, go ahead get the camera.

  • Creative DNA:

22% of customers would unfollow a brand on Social Media if the content were too repetitive and boring. Thanks to lt and BuzzSumo for getting this data together. Social Media Managing needs to be top of the line in the coming years. With the rise of Social Platforms like WhatsApp and Hike, Google Allo and Facebook Messenger, people are becoming wary of the same type of content constantly flooding their news feed from different brands. The scene will soon get saturated to the point where people will stop reacting to the same things over and over again. We need to get more original.

  • Organization Skills:

I am not simply talking about having a routine or a publishing schedule. With more features being unleashed in Social Networks than ever, managers need to stay ahead of the curve to make the most of the new features. This calls in for a little more than just having a content calendar. Better organization skills can entail having time every day to research and curate ideas for content that is out of the box.

  • Selling Skills:

Gone are the days when Social Platforms merely used to be a mode of contact between brands and customers. Selling on Social platforms goes way beyond the conventional means of traditional selling. For one, you cannot be a pushy salesman on Facebook, but again you do not want to miss out on a likely customer by being too slow. To be better able to sell in the social realm, you need to quickly find customer pain points and demonstrate how your product or service can give them relief.

  • Tech Savvy:

Yes! You read that right. The key here is to be tech savvy to the point that you can spot key market shifts and adapt to changes quickly. With new Social platforms coming up, as a Social Media Manager, you do not need to become a pro in all platforms. But, if your audience is adopting a new network, so should you be able to learn the ins and outs of a social network and develop a Social Media Plan accordingly.

  • Search Engine Optimization:

As Social and SEO get interconnected, SEO is going to be in the top 5 skills for Social Media Managers by next year. With more and more Social content finding its way into the search engine results, Social Media Managers should take the hint and learn basic things like Keyword Research and Link Building.

And lastly, as a Social Media Manager you should allocate time every day to:

  1. Review the day’s content
  2. Provide social media insights for major campaigns
  3. Read industry news
  4. Indulge in Live Q&A with CEO on Facebook
  5. Resolve customer queries
  6. Curate content for staff to share throughout the day
  7. Schedule the content for the coming days
  8. Go home and pass out browsing funny memes on Facebook.

Now, since you know what sets the stage for the Social Media Warriors of tomorrow, let’s take a deeper look at some of the interesting changes in Social Media, that are set to share the Social Verse. I am going to talk about 5 important things that have happened or are soon to happen; that should be on the priority list of Social Media Managers in 2017.

  1. Virtual Reality to Soon Set Foot into Social Media –

Well VR is already in action on Facebook and YouTube with the 360o photos and videos, but we are sure to see even deeper integrations in future. Facebook is already integrating Oculus Technology in its 360-degree photos and videos, which allow users to look at a scene from different angles by looking right, up, left and down, allowing for a more captivating experience. It would be the perfect time to start learning how to use 360-degree cameras, as they are going to be huge for businesses. Don’t go about telling me you ain’t a photographer. I ain’t But I love what I do, and I am willing to adapt as times change, as my audience is more receptive to this new form of content in their news feeds.

    virtual-reality
    Takeaway:
Social Managers who are keen to stay on top of the line, should learn the ins and out of VR technology and how it can be used better to engage the audience in the coming days. Think about 360-degree event coverage, sneak peek inside company tours to adventure destinations and more…

  2. Social Shopping To Take Off Soon –

In the past two years, all major social platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram have released in-line buttons. It is not too long before when YouTube may launch a 360-degree virtual shop for sellers wanting to market their products with a personal touch. The options that we presently have on these platforms are enough for customers to make purchases, without leaving the comfort of their news feeds. What is next? Facebook has recently launched a Shop section for Business Pages. Even though integrating storefronts is possible with third-party applications in the Business Pages already, but this is the Social Giants’ first move to shifting e-commerce right into the social space.

    Facebook-social-shopping-2
Takeaway: If you have not integrated Shop into your business page, then you should do it at the earliest. Try to measure the insights from any movement in your business page to make data-backed decisions to sell products. Not all products are born equal, so you might as well find out which products your community is more interested in. While, you have been promoting the wrong products all this while.

  3. Live Streaming To Get Even More Mainstream –

We already saw an uprise in the consumption of live streaming media, when Twitter-owned Periscope reported 10 million active users at the start of 2015. Then came Hubspot, one of the best moves from Facebook till date. I am sure that you are aware, but for those who don’t know or have magically skipped all the live videos in the news feed since March, this year – Facebook Live allows you to stream real-time videos from your mobile or desktop, without using any third-party application. This has technically changed how the massive 2 Billion user base of Facebook interacts with each other. And that’s not the end of it; Facebook has also introduced tons of Hubspot that give you eye-to-eye insights about the performance of your live videos.     live-streaming-concert-on-mobile-device

Takeaway: Integrating Live Streaming goes way beyond the means of standard Social Media Management Suits like Hootsuite, Sprout Social, and Buffer.  At least, for now. If you aren’t already taking advantage of live streaming yet, then the time is now. Take a look at this post on Hubspot for Livestreaming ideas.

  4. Priority Customer Service in Social Media –

Social Media and Customer service have always been key players. Why would people like to wait on the phone, when they can get their query resolved on Facebook or Twitter? According to our study of 500 Sri Lankan retailers, we noted that only 60% of them were using Social Media to answer Customer Queries. And out of that, only 17% were using Twitter and the rest 83% were doing on Facebook. The average time for customer response varied from 24 Hours to a Week, which surely has a lot of room for improvement.customer-support-2

Most businesses do not realize the need to have a dedicated Customer Support in Social Media Channels due to the added costs. Even though customer service falls under the skill of a Social Media Manager, it should be taken more as a supervisor.

Interesting Read: 75 Customer Quotes Facts, Stats, and Quotes

Takeaway: Customer Support is a time taking process, needless to say, it is best served ‘right-from-the-oven.’ If your business is yes to extend full customer support in Social Media, it would be a right time now to start and slowly get a dedicated staff to manage incoming queries at the earliest.

  1. Heard of Community by YouTube Yet? –

Well, if you haven’t already heard about YouTube’s latest endeavor to make the channel a bit more social, then you sure are not keeping up with your industry news. Nonetheless, it is not too late to jump into the YouTube bandwagon if you have been skeptical of YouTube as a one-sided media platform. Recently, YouTube announced a new tab next to Channels, that will allow content producers to indulge in lightweight conversations with their audience. This is what the official announcement from YouTube read.

“do things like text, live videos, images, animated GIFs and more, giving [them] easier, lightweight ways to engage with [their] fans more often in between uploads, in real-time.”

    ..

So it is self-explanatory right. A community for YouTube is going to be a huge success in the coming days. Not only will it allow content producers to interact with fans more often between uploads and video production, but it will also allow them to get feedback about what type of content their fans would like to see from them in the future.

Takeaway: Having a video streaming channel was a must in 2015, 16, but this move from YouTube is surely going to huge and result in an increase in the -ever-so-exponential- the amount of time people spend on the channel. Hop into the first ever Video Social Network and start building your own YouTube community from now! The time is bright my friend.

There is an interesting book I read on YouTube for Business. Read pages 192 – 225 or 7.

And now, since I have given you a fair insight into what is going to change in the coming days, let’s take a look at some of my Social Media Management Hacks, that are sure to increase your productivity as well…

Social Media Management Hacks for Productivity

I am going to list all the things that I use myself. Some may be tools, some maybe nifty little tricks. And they are in no particular order of importance or anything. Here you go:

Increase Tweet Reach with This Nifty Little Trick:

Use a period before tagging anyone with the @symbol at the beginning of a tweet to increase the tweet reach to your followers as well. Without the period, if you tag someone at the beginning of a tweet, your tweet will only be visible to them and their followers. A small but great hack if you want to include more people in your tweet battles.

Social Buzz Club to get more shares:

I see a lot of startups and new businesses struggling to get shares on their content in Social Media, no matter how much time they spend in research and development of content. Apart from leveraging employees, family, friends and supporters to share your content, you can also make use of Social Buzz Club. In this network, you can share your posts and others will share it in their networks. When you share, other content you get points, and these points can be redeemed into posting your content on this platform. It’s a great tool to build a community of people who constantly engage with your content.

Use Crystal Knows to Craft Better Introductory Emails:

Now, this trick is for Gmail. You can use com to find out how to break the ice with your prospective client or lead. What this tool does is, it analyzes public content in your name, to help you better communicate with them. The tool tells you about the personality, style, and communication and gives even deeper insights like – “this person tends to trust people easily.” Or things like “don’t write too much” .. “use emoticons wisely..”

Crystal-knows

Use IFTTT to Automate Content Sharing:

I use IFTTT to Automate my content sharing across various web platforms like WordPress, Blogger, Weebly, Tumblr and also have the content shared on Facebook and LinkedIn, right when I click the publish button. I have lots of other IFTTT Recipes, and I find it a great tool, which saves me hours of work, that I would need to individually cut and paste links and titles, and images into various platforms individually.

IFTTT

Use The Reply Button To Create Twitter Threads:

I don’t see many people using it, but it’s a fantastic way to share longer content in the form of tweets. The idea is to have the contents ready according to Twitter’s character count, and post your primary tweet, followed by the rest as replies to your own You can create a complex blend of content, by mixing videos, pictures, links, and text into your tweet threads, making them stand out in other people’s feed.Reply-button

Use Tweetfull To Drive Twitter Engagement and Traffic:

As Tweets only tend to last for 24 minutes, you at least need 12 tweets to cover the entire day. What I do is, I use Tweetfull to auto re-tweet popular content based on keywords and hashtags that you select, which keeps your Twitter account lively all throughout the day. Even if the automation is good, I would suggest keeping the tweets on a lighter note, since you do not want to look like a spam haven.

Rapportive Helps Me Connect with People Who Mail Me:

Rapportive is also a web app for Gmail, like Crystalknows. What Rapportive does is it shows me all the places I can connect with a person, who has emailed For example, if a person emails me, I can directly send them a Connection Request on LinkedIn or follow them on Twitter, without leaving my email. This is another great tool for Influencer outreach.

Optimize Your Opengraph Tags:

I learned this from the master – Neil Patel. When Neil started paying more attention to Open graphs, his traffic from Facebook increased by 174%. Don’t get baffled by the term, Integrating Opengraph Tags into your website is a matter of 10 seconds, which I am sure you can spare. The latest version of WordPress SEO by Yoast comes with Opengraph Tags integration as well.

Ending Notes:

On a parting note, I would like to remind you about all the things I mentioned in this blog.

Social Media Managers should have skills like Community Management, Content Curation, Customer Service, Creativity, Analytical Decision Making ability, Creative DNA, Social Selling, Relationship Building, Search Engine Optimization, and Organization.

Top things to integrate into your Social Media Action Plan in 2017, if not yet are, Understanding and leveraging Facebook Live, Getting used to VR technology, Selling Your products and services through social storefronts, using Social Media to master Customer Service, and lastly, join the first ever Video Social Platform – Community by YouTube!

All in all, Social Media Management can be a really time-consuming task, and it can be tough to accomplish if you are not doing it as a dedicated job. Irrespective of whether you do Social Media full-time or part-time, you should always take one full day out for Content Curation in a month. This should be the day when you shut off your distractions and solely focus on collecting the best possible content for your audience, be it in the form of Images, Text, Videos, Gifs, or any other media.

Use Google Calendar Alerts to the fullest by marking important dates for dynamic content sharing like Facebook Live Videos, Q&A Interviews with Staff and HOD, Virtual Reality Casts, etc.

I hope you found my study helpful. If you need help managing your Social Media Profiles, you can connect with me on our Facebook Page, or simply drop a comment below and I will get in touch with you. Thanks for reading.
